The Step Challenge

By Community, CSR

The impact of the global coronavirus pandemic continues to be felt across the world; not only has it affected the health of millions of people but the efforts to contain the virus from spreading have also had a profound affect on people’s everyday lives around the world.

In particular, children’s worlds have shrunk rapidly within a short space of time as the freedoms they had previously enjoyed have been curtailed. Schools are temporarily closed, learning is happening at home, and the simple pleasure of playing outside has become significantly restricted. Additionally, the economic impact of the global pandemic has created substantial stresses for families, many of whom have found themselves, for the first time, in need of financial and other aid.

In an effort to support the vital work of the Singapore Children’s Society, three Noble Resource’s employees recently undertook a personal challenge to raise much-needed funds for the COVID Relief Fund that has been working with children, youths, and families in need in Singapore.

On Saturday, 13 June, the Step Masters (Neil Argo – Group COO, Steven Lim Head, Product Control and Mark Smith – Group CIO) each completed 25,300 steps (equivalent to a combined distance of 54.2km), taking them on a virtual walk from Noble Resources’ Singapore office on Anson Road to Woodlands and back through the heart of Singapore along the Green Corridor. This task was all the more challenging as our Step Masters completed their 25,300 steps within the confines of their apartments due to the Circuit Breaker restrictions in place at the time – our Step Masters paced their living rooms and strode their hallways to complete the challenge and raise funds for the Singapore Children’s Society.

Thanks to donations from their colleagues across the world and Noble Resources’ commitment to match every dollar donated, the trio raised an impressive SG$7,630 for the Children’s Society and all achieved a “Personal Best” for the number of steps taken in a single day.

Bringing safety to street and slum children in India

Every night children sleep alone on the streets and around the Kolkata’s main stations. Many are ill, most suffer serious forms of exploitation and all are vulnerable.

A dedicated charity – Future Hope has been helping destitute children escape poverty and danger of the streets for the over 30 years. They provide a safe home where children can feel cared for and help them to become independent, self-supporting members of society.

Noble Resources is a proud partner of Future Hope for almost a decade. In 2019, 130 children are kept safe in their six residential homes. Around 3000 children are offered with full time and all-round education. Their sports and cultural programmes give children the opportunity to build confidence and explore their individual talents. We also see 500 young families are now raise by self-sufficient Future Hope Alumni.

Future Hope school offers an all-round education to the most vulnerable children in Kolkata irrespective of caste, creed, race, and gender.

As the Section 135 of the Companies Act and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Rules in India came into effective in 2014, we have taken steps to ensure that we comply with the two percent spending of our profits on charitable activities. We formulated a CSR policy and had set up a CSR committee to oversee our projects selection and implementation of our Indian operations.

The CSR committee reviews our programme every year, and since 2017, our Indian subsidiary has picked up the baton to continuing our financial assistance to Future Hope.
